Spring & Summer Vibes

Easing into Fall

Heyyyy! Guest post coming at ya. My name is Heather and Heidi has taken our photos since our teen girls were practically babies, so at this point we’ve got our system down.

As always, Heidi was super helpful in guiding me to all her clothing suggestion resources and once I had a good idea of what I wanted, she helped give me feedback to finalize my purchases.

We love to do our “Fall” photos in late August or September at the latest, so we can still count on good weather with less chance of being weather-rescheduled, we have more clothing options and don’t have to bundle up and layer our clothes, and the best part of all, we have our photos back in plenty of time to snatch up those Holiday card deals and get them ordered well in advance.

We also know that dressing smaller families or families with teens can be challenging, so we thought we would share what I ultimately decided on for our photos this year. The best advice Heidi gives, and I can’t agree more, is to start with Mom. Always start with Mom. Once Mom finds the perfect outfit or dress and feels good in it, everyone else is pretty easy.

All of the outfit items below are currently on sale and SUPER affordable. Hope this is helpful!

A Picture Perfect Family Inspiration

If I were to choose exactly what I'd want a family to wear at a photo session.... it would be this! The great thing about this family outfit capsule is, it can be altered a bit for each season - layers or long sleeves can be added for late fall or early spring, jackets can be added, sandals can be replaced with boots. Each outfit can be adjusted to be age appropriate too. I love the neutral palette. I love the vintage yet modern feel. I love that I can see this in a field, in the woods, on a farm, at a rustic area, near water, at the beach, in a vineyard, even an urban or downtown landscape... It's just a great wardrobe for any kind of family!

Personalized Styling Sessions Available!

Did you know that I am now offering personalized styling services for sessions? The question I get asked most often is, "What do we wear?"

I have some FREE styling inspiration here: https://www.heiditimmons.com/outfit-inspo

You can also scroll through my past blog posts here: https://www.heiditimmons.com/blog/2021/7/12/more-fall-outfit-inspiration

Or you can join my VIP group here, where I share a ton of links to things I love for photo sessions:
https://www.facebook.com/groups/505572470024091

If you prefer more direction and help with styling, I am totally here for you!
For just $65 I will curate a photo session look for you! You can book that styling session here: https://heiditimmons.bigcartel.com/product/personal-styling-session

I will start our styling session with a phone call and ask you some questions about the colors you are drawn to, colors that are in your home, and what colors you feel pretty in. Then I will ask about style, vibe and fit you are looking for, and also consider the location we will be shooting at.

I will start with mom's outfit and build everything off of that. Moms are the hardest to dress, we have more areas that we want to cover and conceal and honestly, family photos are for Mom, so that is why I make her a priority!

Once mom's outfit is decided on, I will move forward with all the other family members. I will provide shopping links and a collage of all the outfits together. I will provide one revision, if needed, so that we can get the perfect look for you.

Styling for outfits takes me roughly 4 to 5 hours after I search different websites, chat with you, and put the collage together. This saves you time and stress in the long run. Also, I am budget conscious just like everyone else... I do try to find affordable clothing that can be worn again, possibly found at a thrift store, or that you may even have in your closet or can borrow from a friend. Photos are a visual medium and great outfits are a BIG part of what makes a photo session go from pretty good to WOW THESE ARE GORGEOUS!

Here is a sample from a recent styling session:

The final email I send to my clients includes the photo collage, direct purchase links for every item, along with style tips on how to wear accessories, style hair and layer the clothing. I take all the guess work and stress off your plate!

Here's what a recent client had to say about our styling session!

"Having Heidi help me with styling the outfits for our photo session is well worth the money. She did a great job starting with my vision and color story and then patiently sending me ideas while we nailed down the perfect dress for me. Along with making a storyboard for our outfits, she also sent me shopping links to make the whole process simple and sent helpful tips for wearing the clothes! Figuring out coordinating outfits, colors and fabrics can be a huge source of stress for me and I loved getting her expert help with this."

I hope this option helps those of you that feel stuck or overwhelmed when it comes to preparing for your upcoming session! If you missed it above, here is the link where you can purchase this add-on for your session! https://heiditimmons.bigcartel.com/product/personal-styling-session

Anderson Family {Newborn}

The Anderson Family is SO FUN to be around! Once you take a look at these photos, I'm sure you'll be able to see that their family is overflowing with love, sweetness, and joy. Miss Hallie, newly minted big sister, totally stole the show. Her excitement over having a new brother to love on was palatable and made our time together incredibly fun.

Congrats on your newest member, Anderson Family!

Lifestyle versus Posed Newborn Sessions

Recently I've had a lot of questions about newborn sessions, and what they include, how much they cost, what options they have, etc. I wanted to share more information to help you decide which option is best for you. I generally offer two options for newborn sessions: A more posed and elaborate session, including props and baby alone shots, and a Lifestyle session, which is much more candid, natural, and less orchestrated.

A Lifestyle session is more about the family connection, snuggling in your home, documenting and enjoying your baby's nursery, and parents generally holding your new sweet baby and cuddling up together. This session can also be outdoors if that’s more your vibe! The session lasts for up to 90 minutes and costs $485. Here are some examples of what your lifestyle newborn session could look like:

A Posed session includes those type of images above, plus 2-3 styled and posed set ups, with props and backdrops and baby alone. These sessions take more time, as baby is generally sleeping during the posed shots, and this can take time depending on the baby. This session lasts from 3-4 hours, and costs $600. Here are some samples of a posed newborn session:

A Dreamy Storyteller Session...

2021-07-15_0011.jpg

I couldn’t wait to share this session with you all, for so many reasons! First, I wanted you to see what variety you get with a storyteller session, in poses and locations, and what magic we can create together when we have the time to chase the sunset and capture every pose you may want. Storyteller sessions allow us to be more creative and patient and get those important posed shots, as well as the candid and creative and playful shots.

Secondly, I wanted to highlight the beautiful outfits the Hostettler’s chose. I KNOW that choosing outfits is often the hardest part of a photo session, but when we work together to create the perfect cohesive look, it makes ALL the difference in the world in your final result.

And lastly, this session really just showcases how great your portraits can be when a family is able to relax, enjoy the time, snuggle up, be silly, and trust me with the direction of your session.

I love the final result and I hope you’ll consider booking a Storyteller session for your next shoot!

More Fall Outfit Inspiration

I am doing a session at the faux beach on Sauvie’s Island at a transitional time and mom asked if I would put outfits together for her. Our session is early September and she will use these photos for her home and her Christmas card. We chose mom's dress first and everything was built around that beautiful lace dress from Country Blossom Boutique. Here's the look I put together for her! It would look great at any location and is a great summer to fall look!

Styled Boho Set Up

2021-06-28_0006.jpg

As you all know, I have an obsession with styled set ups! For months I was dreaming up and collecting things for a styled Boho session. I also wanted to try some new shooting techniques and posing. The Stewart Family and I have worked together lots in the past and when we booked their session I asked them if they were open to doing something new and letting me style the session and choose what they wore. I love how the session turned out so much and I asked Kari to give her thoughts on what it was like to be on the client end of the session!

2021-06-28_0003.jpg

From Kari:

We have done several family photo sessions with Heidi now. What I love about each of them is the definitive timestamp each one brings with the location, photos, and ages of our family members (especially the boys). Every time we receive the photos in our inbox, we are inundated with gasps and ooh and ahh over the cute portrayals Heidi captures. When Heidi approached our family about doing a Boho styled session, I was completely willing to let her tell us what looked good and pass more control on to her. We had done a variety of sessions by then, and I was absolutely intrigued in having her help us with coming up with something new to hang on our walls.

Heidi gave me some general color and outfit suggestions, and shared some of her vision. She sent me photos of props and things she was interested in shooting with, but also seeking my input to see if it was something we were comfortable having. This made me really excited because I loved the colors and vibe she was wanting and was really eager to see it come together. These styled Boho photos surely did not disappoint. With her guidance, willingness to be flexible, and fun interactions along the way, the styled set was easy and really gorgeous. When we got out photos, I was, again,
wow'd. This time, more than others, I felt like we were literally in a magazine and could feel the love she was able to photograph for us.

2021-06-28_0001.jpg

Because I fell in love with the session so hard, I decided to offer Boho mini sessions in late summer.
Here is a link to book your own mini session:https://heiditimmons.bigcartel.com/product/styled-boho-mini-sessions

I am also including links to shop the look. I chose their outfits and would advise any family to dress similar to this! You will want neutrals, earth tones, solids and textures. No prints or pastels for this! And we will go barefoot, so no need to buy shoes!
